In the framework of improving the quality of training in Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) schools, WDA is moving from the pedagogy approach which was Knowledge-Based Training to Competence-Based Training. TVET graduates have to master English as an official language in Rwanda to meet the needs of the labor market. TVET schools and institutions offer different trades such as hospitality, welding, plumbing, veterinary, engineering, alternative energy, electricity, telecommunications, mechanics, etc.
There is need to improve the English language of teachers because it is a barrier in communication. English as an official language is not well mastered by instructors and hence students in TVET institutions, which is a barrier in communication in school and in professional settings. In order to implement WDA strategy to develop a system for training instructors in the use of English as a common medium of instruction, Peace Corps Response Volunteers (PCRVs) will conduct in-service training of instructors/trainers as well as students/trainees.
An English Trainer experienced in teaching English is needed to improve the overall English program in the Vocational Training Institution assigned to them. The English Trainer will:
• Assist in the planning and the delivery of training modules based on current curriculum
• Design and/or adapt lesson plans according to trades offered by a TVET school
• Prepare pedagogical and didactic tools, classroom equipment and materials
• Help to deliver and co-facilitate trainings of instructors/trainers, students/trainees and staff where applicable
• Teach speaking skills putting emphasis on functional and situational language by introducing students to appropriate expressions used to do things such as expressing a wish, opinion, language used in technical and vocational fields, markets, etc., and introducing students to elements of the English culture
• Teach listening for specific and general information by listening to casual and prepared speeches, listening to radio and/or broadcasts or recorded documentaries; listening to English speakers in various conditions; watching TV shows in English and in students’ content areas
• Assess the achievement of each competency targeted
• Reinforce and coach students’ English and debate clubs in extra-curricular activities
• Research and share current educational trends
The goal of this assignment is to help staff and students improve their English and the general English program at the TVET school.
Workforce Development Authority (WDA)
• Bachelor’s Degree in languages, English, communications or education, or a TEFL certification, or certificate in any technical and vocational training subjects combined with demonstrated language learning experience (i.e., tutoring)
• 2 years experience in teaching English language as foreign language in a highly variable context
• Good communication, strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with others
• Must be proactive with good problem-solving skills
• Capable to work under pressure in a multicultural environment
